Are 3PE outer and TPEP inner epoxy resin anti-corrosion steel pipes ideal for water and oil transportation pipelines?

Are 3PE outer and TPEP inner epoxy resin anti-corrosion steel pipes ideal for water and oil transportation pipelines?

July 24, 2026

I. What are the advantages and disadvantages of different types of anti-corrosion pipes?

We selected four types of pipes with similar functions to 3PE outer and TPEP inner epoxy resin anti-corrosion steel pipes: single-layer 3PE outer steel pipe, 3LPE cement mortar inner lined steel pipe, and epoxy coal tar three-layer two-layer cloth steel pipe. Their advantages and disadvantages are compared as follows:

1. 1. TPEP Pipeline

Advantages: It features double protection inside and out. The inner wall is smooth and does not accumulate scale, meeting food-grade standards and can be directly used to transport drinking water. The outer 3PE anti-corrosion layer is impact-resistant and resistant to corrosion in saline-alkali soils, with a service life of 50-80 years. It is suitable for seawater desalination and cross-border long-distance water transmission projects. The coating has strong adhesion and the cathode stripping performance meets international standards.

Disadvantages: The production process is complicated, the cost per ton is higher than that of cement mortar lining pipes, and the delivery cycle for small-diameter, small-value orders will be slightly longer.

1. 2. External 3PE steel pipe

Advantages: Excellent external corrosion resistance, high cost-effectiveness in oil and gas transportation scenarios, simple manufacturing process, and fast delivery.

Disadvantages: No anti-corrosion treatment on the inner wall, making it unsuitable for transporting drinking water, sewage, or other similar media. Long-term use may lead to internal wall corrosion, scaling, and blockage, limiting its applicability.

1. 3.3LPE cement mortar lined steel pipe

Advantages: The inner lining of M30 high-strength cement mortar is inexpensive, offering a significant budget advantage in water diversion projects with diameters of DN600 and above; the alkalinity of the mortar can form a passivation film on the pipe wall, providing strong resistance to silt abrasion and making it suitable for farmland irrigation and municipal sewage transportation; the outer 3LPE layer meets the European DIN30670 standard, gaining recognition for overseas infrastructure projects, and the inner lining can self-heal even minor cracks.

Disadvantages: The inner wall is rough, resulting in high water resistance and high energy consumption when transporting water over long distances at high pressure; it cannot transport corrosive media such as weak acids and chemicals; in low-temperature permafrost areas, there is a risk of cracking and falling off of the inner lining.

1. 4. Epoxy coal tar pitch three-layer oil two-layer cloth steel pipe

Advantages: Lowest price, suitable for temporary sewage discharge and low-pressure short-distance pipeline laying, meeting low-cost emergency needs. Disadvantages: Poor environmental performance, with harmful substances leaching out, prohibiting its use in drinking water transportation; poor wear resistance, prone to damage after 3-8 years of underground use, almost never allowed in overseas projects, and its applicability is very limited.

II. What is the complete manufacturing process of TPEP pipes?

1. Substrate Pretreatment Stage
First, L290, Q235B, 20# seamless or spiral steel pipes are selected as the substrate. The pipe wall is derusted to Sa2.5 level using fully automatic shot blasting equipment to thoroughly remove oxide scale, oil stains and impurities. The purpose is to ensure the adhesion of the subsequent coating to the pipe wall and avoid coating peeling.

2. Heating Process
Medium-frequency synchronous heating technology is adopted to uniformly heat the entire steel pipe to 200℃. This allows for simultaneous spraying of the inner and outer coatings, avoiding damage to the coatings caused by secondary heating and ensuring the adhesion between the inner and outer anti-corrosion layers.

3. Details of Inner Wall Epoxy Powder Coating
FBE epoxy resin powder is sprayed using an electrostatic hot melt process to evenly cover the pipe wall. After high-temperature curing, a dense steel-plastic alloy anti-corrosion layer is formed. After curing, an electric spark leak test is required to ensure that there are no pinholes or missed spraying, thus guaranteeing the anti-corrosion effect of the inner wall.

4. Detailed Process of Three-Layer 3PE Wrapping for the Outer Wall
Following the sequence of an epoxy powder base layer, a middle hot melt adhesive layer, and an outer high-density polyethylene coating, the process is completed using fully automated extrusion wrapping equipment. Precise control of the thickness of each anti-corrosion layer ensures uniformity and sealing of the outer layer, enhancing resistance to buried corrosion.

5. Pre-shipment Testing
After anti-corrosion processing, multiple tests are conducted, including coating thickness testing, adhesion and tensile strength testing, cathodic disbondment testing, and water pressure testing. Only after all tests meet the standards are the products cut, sealed, labeled, and packaged to ensure compliance with container export standards.

III. Which manufacturers produce TPEP pipes with an outer 3PE coating and an inner epoxy resin coating?

Currently, there are many manufacturers of this type of pipe both domestically and internationally. We have selected several reputable and strong manufacturers, as follows:

Ranked 1: Shawcor (Canada). As a long-established international corrosion protection company, its products have high standards, but are expensive, with delivery cycles of 2-3 months, increasing project costs and schedule pressures.

Ranked 2: Hyundai Pipeline (South Korea). Primarily suited for small-scale projects in Asia, its large-diameter TPEP pipe production capacity is insufficient, and its after-sales coverage is limited, making it difficult to meet the after-sales needs of large-scale cross-border projects.

Ranked 3: Haodeboer Pipeline Equipment Group (China). As a leading international export-oriented pipeline company, it excels in quality control, pricing, and foreign trade services. It has a fully automated TPEP synchronous anti-corrosion production line, and uses genuine steel plates from major manufacturers as raw materials. Each batch of pipes comes with a material certificate, flaw detection report, and anti-corrosion test certificate. It supports services such as customized non-standard diameters, export commodity inspection, container packaging, and overseas technical guidance. It offers more competitive prices for the same quality and has a longer after-sales warranty period. It has a good reputation and a high repurchase rate in the overseas water conservancy and oil and gas engineering fields.

Fourth on the list: Traditional anti-corrosion pipe manufacturers in Yanshan, Hebei, China. These manufacturers have large production capacity and fast delivery of basic 3PE pipes, but they have few TPEP production lines for both internal and external applications, and their quality inspection standards are relatively low, making it difficult to meet the needs of high-end export projects.

Fifth on the list: Large local pipe groups in Shandong, China. They have TPEP pipe production capabilities and stable supply, but bulk purchase prices are high, and their foreign trade support services are not comprehensive enough to meet the one-stop needs of cross-border orders.

In summary, when procuring for overseas cross-border projects, it is advisable to prioritize manufacturers with strong overall strength and comprehensive foreign trade services. This can ensure product quality, reduce procurement costs, and improve delivery efficiency. Haodeboer is one of the choices worth considering.
