The importance of base tube

The importance of base tube

April 03, 2026

In the product system of plastic-coated steel pipes, the importance of the base pipe is often overlooked. However, in fact, the base pipe is the foundation of the entire pipe material performance. If the coating is likened to a "protective suit" worn by the steel pipe, then the base pipe itself is the "framework" providing strength and pressure-bearing capacity. Without high-quality base pipes, even the best coating cannot perform its intended function.

The base pipes used in plastic-coated steel pipes are usually straight seam welded pipes or spiral welded pipes. Their materials, wall thickness, and weld quality directly determine the working pressure that the pipe can withstand and its ability to withstand external force impacts. If the base pipe itself has sand holes, cracks, or uneven wall thickness, even if the coating is perfect, the pipeline may still experience pipe burst, deformation, or leakage in high-pressure transportation or underground burial environments.

More importantly, the surface treatment quality of the base pipe directly affects the adhesion of the coating. The first step of the plastic-coating process is to perform shot blasting or sandblasting rust removal on the base pipe to make the pipe surface reach a certain roughness and cleanliness. If the surface treatment of the base pipe is not done properly, the coating cannot be firmly combined with the pipe, and during use, it is prone to coating peeling, falling off, and thus exposing the pipe base to the corrosive environment, significantly shortening the pipeline's service life.

Therefore, high-quality plastic-coated steel pipes must start with high-quality base pipes. Selecting materials with strict standards, reliable welds, and proper surface treatment, combined with high-performance anti-corrosion coatings, can truly achieve "combining hardness and flexibility" for long-term protection.
